Cigar Ashtrays

A holdy for your stogey

What is it?

A good friend asked us to make a couple of cigar ashtrays after seeing a social media post about one made for personal use. After a little discussion, we selected some pieces of Black Walnut and Hackberry and set to work. Both of these are finished with Rubio Monocoat to retain and enhance the natural wood beauty and help protect it from falling ashes.

What did we learn?

These ashtrays are made in a manner similar to bandsaw boxes. We resaw the top off (use a bandsaw to remove a layer of wood). We then trace the insert and cut out the shape from the layer we removed. We then clean it up and glue that back onto the base. Clamp it! Once the glue dries, we sand and adjust the shape a bit, then clean and apply the finish. Bob’s your uncle!

In Closing…

We continue to appreciate the creation that wood is. The characteristics, grain, defects, and so many things lend to designing and making various things from the most unlikely pieces of wood.
